The Greek Center for Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) has found that the leading online property rental market in the international real estate market is Airbnb. Over 126,000 Greek apartments, villas, cottages, and houses are set out on the platform.

More than 50% of the properties that are exhibited on the pages of the online service Airbnb, located in the south-eastern part of Central Greece, on the island of Crete and on the territory of the southern Aegean islands. Next in terms of the number of offers follows real estate in Central Macedonia, the Ionian Islands, and the Peloponnese.
In the first six months of last year, 93% of the properties in the Attica region were within the borders of Athens. Thus, it becomes apparent preferences of tourists regarding the place of rest – the Greek capital remains a clear favorite.
Advantages of Airbnb and Competitors
As reported by Airbnb (the KEPE study was based on this data), eight years ago the online platform had low popularity in the Greek real estate market, since few people knew it. However, today it is considered the main market for tourist housing. Its popularity is growing every day, despite the commission, which is charged to the owner of rental housing (3% of the cost of booking) and from the tenant (6-12%).
Real estate on Airbnb is also chosen because it is cheaper for tourists than renting a hotel room. In addition, private housing provides home comfort, communication and the possibility of payment in installments.
The study showed that in addition to Airbnb, tourists choose more than one Internet service to search for housing in the short-term rental. They browse all relevant offers on resources such as TripAdvisor, Trivago, Booking.com, HomeAway, and others.
